Four Connected Domains
One throughline: promoting health and reducing preventable Native death through co-identifying health needs and health trends, collaboratively revitalizing original instructions for health and wellbeing, and increasing positive health behavioral changes and outcomes through co-developing and testing culturally-grounded, rigorous health interventions.
Our work centers American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) children, maternal and paternal/caregiver health, and family wellness across physical, mental, and spiritual domains. We extend this work to cancer prevention through partnership with the NACCHE National Cancer Institute–designated Center.
We recognize that child health is inseparable from the health of mothers, fathers, caregivers, families, communities, and the environments in which they live. Our approach therefore addresses health across generations and within the relationships and ecologies that sustain Native communities.
We integrate rigorous research methods with Indigenous sciences, community knowledge, storytelling, land-based healing, and community-engaged approaches to develop and evaluate culturally grounded strategies that promote health and prevent disease.
Leads In Health Challenges
Health Promotion and Cancer Prevention — Advancing Native child and family health through nutrition, physical activity, food sovereignty, mental wellness, and land-based approaches that strengthen protective factors and reduce cancer and other chronic disease disparities.
Healing Across The Lifespan
Native Child, Maternal, Paternal & Caregiver Health — Promoting well-being from before birth through childhood and across the family life course through culturally grounded, family-centered approaches and practices that strengthen children, parents, caregivers, and the relationships and environments that support them.
Building Sustainable Health Approaches
Family Wellness — Building family and community wellness by addressing childhood trauma, strengthening protective factors and healthy relationships, and advancing culturally grounded practices, community-led research, training, and workforce development across generations.
Dissemination and Communication
Research Into Practice & Community Impact — Translating Indigenous and scientific knowledge into evidence-informed interventions, clinical and community practice, training, policy, and sustainable strategies that improve health outcomes in Native communities- while generating insights that may inform health promotion and prevention efforts in other communities.
